Recently I bought a HJ-10 in Gold.
As far as I know, these should be suspending in the water. This one has a rise similar to somewhere in between of FLR-10 and F-11.
I am using a piece of 20 LB sufix as a trace, mounted directly to the splitring with a small swivel to the other end.
Could it be that these lures are balanced to work with a steel trace?

Not all rapalas are the same, manufacturing errors can result in floating lures that sink, suspending that float etc. DT flats are supposed to float but a lot of them sink

Sometimes too - the water temps can make a slight difference on how a bait suspends!

Water content can make a difference. How much salt is in the water etc.. Even fresh water has some salt.

I suppose lures would have a tendency to float more in saltwater too

So, the quality of rapala is not consistend?
Don't get me wrong, I like the fact that it has a rise, I can use it in shallow situations now. By Shallow I mean 1,5 ft of water max!

It's as consistent as it can get. The plastic lures should be a lot similar in floating or suspending, but the balsa lures are all going to be different since it's made by nature not man
