Hey, I'm going to be making a trip out to the west coast of Vancouver Island this February and will be bound to the shore. I will likely be targeting various rockfish and possibly ling as I have heard that some periodically venture near shore. I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience fishing the surf and is willing to share any potentially useful tips or information? Thanks

Ive never fished that area. But I would guess its the same as where I fish. Or at least very similar. I use squid for bait. But any thing will work.
If your fishing a very rocky area, Id suggest cloth bags with sand for weight. Cheaper than lead. Save you a few bucks and it works pretty good. You can pic them up probably at any tackle store there.
If the waters are super calm. I suggest throwing some crankbaits. My best days are when its real flat. I personally like throwing Shad Raps. Pearl White has been my best color.
Don't let him take you in the rocks. If you get a big one, thats the first place he's going to go.

Thank you both very much. I especially found the tips interesting and I am excited to get going and give them a try. I've got a week or so prior to heading out so I'm going to do some research into those sand weights and see if I cant rig up a few to take out and save buying them. I had looked into buying weights but was surprised to see how much they cost for good ones so I am really glad to learn of this alternate technique. Thank you both.

Well, me and a buddy of mine gave it our best given our equipment, knowledge, and time but didn't catch any fish. We tryed night fishing once or twice and managed to catch a leather star and two large sunflower stars but nothing else. It was a neat experience and despite not catching anything I think I am a better angler for it as it pushed me far out of my element and streached my knowledge as a fisherman. I will be trying this again some time in the future.

Lingcod, rockfish (not striped bass but China, quillback, copper, blue, black, brown, tiger, etc., rockfish), perch (shiner, pile and surf perch), cabezeon, greenling, and dogfish to name a few. Apparently they move out to deeper water in the winter months which may be why we were unsuccessful.

Oh yes, and of course the salmon but there are no runs this time of year.
