Hey Jeremy,
Not easy fishing with something like that. I have tendonitis in my "casting elbow". But a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do, eh?

Hey Jeremy, Not easy fishing with something like that. I have tendonitis in my "casting elbow". But a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do, eh? I keep trying to get out fishing as much as I can. I might have to take up slip bobber fishing full time. One doctor has some ideas on how he may cut down the pain and systems but have to wait until the insurance company makes their decisions.

Hi. I am Christian and more a fisherman than a collector.
I love the variety of different colours Rapala offers and i do not like their crappy quality and bad engineering.

Hi Christian, welcome aboard.
Care to elaborate on your last statement? For the record too, we are no 'Rapala homers' here either, but if you want to say something, be specific...

Care to elaborate on your last statement? [...] if you want to say something, be specific... Ok i will try to be as specific as i can i a foreign language. I understand people here love Rapala and might not like critisicm. But i believe that some lures have problems which could be easily solved by the manufacturer. For example the Super Shad Rap 14, which is advertised a lure for really strong saltwater fish like Tarpon, ect. has the following problems: 1. Split Rings are real cheap quality. I have had 10 lbs saltwater fish opening the split rings of a new SSR 14. Rapala could improve them by investing just a few cents. 2. The Permasteel treble hooks are not suited for saltwater gamefish over 20lbs. Every serious fisherman has to replace them, otherwise they will get bent open. I have dozens of these useless trebles hooks, which i took of my lures. For less than 1$ more per lure they could equip the lures with trebles that are actually suited for bigger fish. 3. The Tail of the Super Shad Rap needs to be reinforced. Even smaller toothless critter can easily break. I know a fishing lodge that has dozens of them without tail. 4. The wire inside the lure is not sufficient quality. They should replace it by a better quality. 5. The split rings don't have enough space to move freely, so many fish are lost when they shake their head. The only way to prevent this is adding a second split ring. 6. This is my main point of critique: The wire inside the lure is not closed* as one would expect! I understand that Balsa[which is a great material for lures] breaks easily. But i do not understand why Rapala does not connect the two loose ends of the wire inside. If it would be connected you will not loose the fish even if the lure is complete destroyed [and this one gets destroyed often]. For just a few cents Rapala could fix this error which is known for years. -->Conclusion: The SSR 14 has some very obvious errors. The lure could be improved a LOT for not much effort. Especially the Wire inside needs to be closed like it is on other quality saltwater lure. Regards, Christian *See X-Ray picture here: [http://images.google.de/images?hl=de&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:de:official&hs=2nu&q=rapala%20super%20shad%20rap&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi] PS:Maybe this post should be moved out of the introduction thread into its own quality discussion thread.

Those are very valid arguments and I hear what you're saying.
We here have been very critical of Rapala over the years, myself specifically especially regarding the lack of colors available to us in the USA.
We love Rapalas, but I think its safe to say we are critical of them at too, meaning we do not necessarily have 'blind love' for everything Rapala.
Good post.
And send me your address, as our 400th member, I'd like to send you a little something...

I am glad people here are sceptical about the stuff they are fans of.
I have experienced other collectors communities, that have this 'blind love' and it's not fun to be critical there...
Maybe we should recommend the creation of a new lure to Rapala.
I could imagine a Magnum Shad Rap with the following details: - same form as Super Shad Rap - really heavy, over 100g - much stronger, all weak parts reinforced - includes a nice loud rattle

Hallo Christian.
nice to see you here so fast ...
well, and some very nice suggestions for improving the super shad - maybe you should send an application to rapala development department - but first please ask the fans-of-SSR here on the board if they will allow you tinkering with "their" favorite lure ...
and you are right, maybe this post should not be here at all, but i guess Ted will take care of that, if he thinks so too ... especially since i have not introduced myself here ... it seems i am the terrible ebayer from germany.
wolfgang (aka cdj-7-11)
p.s.: Ted, you can save some postage if you let me know what Christian may get. it seems he joined on my recommendation and is living in germany just like me. maybe he can use one of my SSR14 SFC as a 400th member-sign-up gift?

Howdy y'all... just hanging out here in L.A. (Lower Alabama). My name is DD and I have been collecting Risto Raps for about a year. My first Risto I was given to me by a friend and I fished it a few times and ended up catching a 6lb largemouth bass with it on the 4th of July of 2008. At the time I didn't know what the lure was other than a Rapala. After a little research I found out that they have been discontinued! I bought a few off of ebay and my collection has been growing ever since. I currently has 26 RR with most of them being bought from a local fishing tackle flea market shop: each of them for less than five bucks! Not bad considering I've seen them sell for a lot more on ebay. Anyway, I found this site after digging for more info about the RR. I especially like the Color Code Project section of the different colors of all the lures. Looks like I be hanging out here for a while. Thanks!

Well, now that im global, i guess maybe i should offically introduce myself. My name is Jeff Bacon, and i have an enter button problem. most of you around here know what im talking about. anyone new here, youll figure it out shortly, although im going to try hard to use it in this post. besides being a general rapala nutcase, i am first and foremost a farmer. im either 5th,6th, or 7th generation farmer, depending on what relative you talk to. generally figure that im 5th though. We grow corn for ethanol, soybeans, Green beans(for canning and fresh, usually Seneca foods[green giant]), wheat, and of course, Potatoes!. the vegatables and grains have done well for us, but its the potatoes that really is what we do. used to do sweet corn, peas, and cucumbers, have given them up to make room for more grains. potatoe acres are down to around 550 acres a year, from nearly 1000 acres annually just a few years ago. all in all, we farm a total of around 3300 acres. this keeps me pretty much too busy to spend alot of time fishing during the summer and fall months. and i dont get ice fishing as much as i would like either. so, what is it that keeps me from fishing? heres my office i spend most of my summer in this, our sprayer. 1000 gallon tank for chemicals, booms are 110ft wide. you can see part of the farm in the background of the second picture. potatoes must be sprayed every week, usually 14 to 16 times a year. plus everything else needs to be sprayed from time to time. on top of farm work, i also have a few other things at home that keep me busy my (only) son Jacob, he is almost 10 months old now, man how time flies. He, just like me, is a Brewers Fan. Untuckem! I am a sports fan. Packers fan, Brewers Fan, Race fan, but i cant stand pro basketball, and i can make myself root for any of the nearest NHL teams, if WI get a pro hockey team, i will probably be IN! i have a pasle of pets, a lab, a horse, 4 bullheads, 2 grey cats, and then these 2. 'Q' the duck we adopted after finding it orphaned in the inlaws front yard. named it Q, some of you race fans out there might actually get that. This is our newest cat, rescued this one after my wifes old, old, old cat finally had to be put down. after a long sitdown over the name, we agreed on 'Risto' of course. Well, besides that, i do get a chance to fish once and a while. a nice little 19 incher My wife and i are have also gotten addicted to Geocaching, if you have never done it, try it, its really pretty neat, and great outdoor activity to do with kids. heres a pic of the wife and i gathering cache info after climbing the 303 steps to the top of the mound in the state park were my wife works notice i had to do all the heavy lifting. well, stick around, and you will find out more of the little things about me that i usually ramble on about, and, guy, get used to posts without as many seperate thoughts. bacon

Guess i'll say Hi.....My name is Michael, i'll be 52 years old this month. I've been married for 25yrs and have two daughters and one granddaughter....We live in the Ouachita mountain region of west central Arkansas. I love bassfishing, and any form of motorsports, and motorcycle riding....among a zillion other hobbies....lol I'm an airbrush artist with over 30yrs experience in painting everything from tee shirts to showcars.....I mainly focus on custom motorcyles and helmets nowdays, with the occasional racecar or wallmural thrown in just for good measure....lol I was recently exposed to custom painted crankbaits, and I can't wait to try my hand at repainting some of my own, which is kinda how I ended up at this website....lookin at repainted Rapalas This looks like a cool site, so I thought i'd join up.....see ya'll around.

Hey Bacon, That return key is still stuck after all these years? Love the state park pic. I know the one and the view on that platform is amazing. I have very fond memories of that park. Nice work on the farm. Does that tractor have ac and a radio for the 12 hour days? I used to watch those green bean trucks driving all around. I always wondered, "who in the hell is eating all of those green beans"??

Hi everybody,
My name is Bob and I'm 44, married and have a 13 year old son. We own and operate a power equipment dealership (primarily chainsaws and sawmills) here in the foothills of the Alberta Rockies. We live in a tiny town of 575 people and our backyard is thousands of square miles of crown land wilderness. Sometimes it's good, sometimes, it's hairy (also home to grizzlies, wolves, cougars, wild boars, etc, etc, etc). The provincial area we live in borders on Banff and Jasper National Parks and is some of the most pristine land left on the planet. That said, with industry and tourism, the pressure is on like it is everywhere, but in the meantime, this is some of the best fish and game territory anywhere.
Primarily, our fish of choice here are various species of trout (rainbow, brookies, browns, etc) and some awfully nice Northern Pike. Winter lasts most of the year, so as soon as the ice cracks up, we're on the water! The short summers make the fish voracious as well.
Anyhew, this a great place to hang and talk about fishing things. Thanks for setting this up Ted!
