This exercise makes me wonder if I put too much emphasis on lure color. me too, its was a very interesting idea and is yeilding some very cool results. all sorts of lures in my box that i only use in certain waters, maybe they need to be tried everywhere. bacon

This exercise makes me wonder if I put too much emphasis on lure color. I hear you on that, but there are some colors that I am frankly tired of trying to use with no results. It all depends on the lake though. The lake I used to live on (around 1995) used to kill everything on Clown. Now, several towns and 15 miles away, I haven't caught anything on Clown in years. Weird...

maybe your next rod should be an ugly stick, you will have to try to break the end off of those. bacon The vintage Ugly Stick rods are practicly un breakable!! the newer generation models aren't build that well anymore.

I used to slam on the J-11 in Blue.. now I throw it whenever I need a break between the pike I catch on the J-11 BHO.
I can't tell the colour has anything to do with it.. maybe the time of the year?

I think color is one of the tougher things to figure out. Some days it doesn't seem to matter at all. Other times it seems to make all the difference.
I have some really shallow clear spots in the lake I fish, so sometimes I can see exactly where the fish is I am trying to catch. The bass my nephew caught a few days ago was one like that. I had an F-9 in SFC on and tried a few times to get him to bite while I twitched it above his head. He clearly noticed it, swam under it, but showed no interest in it.
I called my nephew over, who had on an F-9 in Shiner. I told him to try the same thing, and as the bass swam under his lure he had his mouth open with intent to strike. My nephew, not being able to see him as well as I could, pulled it away before he had a chance to bite it. His next cast, same thing, except this time he got it.
That bass ignored the same exact lure, presented in the same exact way by me on 4-5 attempts. When my nephew used a different color, the fish wanted it not once, but twice. If color wasn't the difference in that instance then I don't know what was.
Just to provide a little more information on this experiment, all but one of these fish were caught in the same small lake, or the stream that runs off of it. It is pretty shallow, mostly about 3.5- 4ft deep, a few spots as deep as 6 feet and some really shallow areas at about 1ft or less. Most of these fish are only 1-2 pounds, some obviously smaller, and none over 2 yet this year. The biggest I ever caught there since I had a scale was 3lb 6oz. I wouldn't bet on there being a fish much over 5lbs in the entire lake, but who knows.
I think this may speak to diddly's point a little bit. In this small area food may be scarce and these small fish are willing to take some chances. If I remember correctly, most of the bigger fish I have caught over the past few years have come on more traditional patterns for my area like perch and silver. Also the biggest bass I've ever been able to see there, which I believe was well over my 3lb 6oz one, didn't want anything to do with whatever I tried. He was a little to experienced for that, which may be why he was able to get bigger than most the others.
This is certainly turning into an interesting little study though!!!

Got a few more today! Only 2 on new lures though. I have a photobucket slideshow that I unintentionally created in order to post pics here. I kinda like it, so I went back to a few lures I had caught fish on, but not had pics of. I don't see anyway I won't reach my goal, so I figured why not. I may go back and try again with some of the lures I have terrible pics of too, and see if I can't improve them. 51. J-11 Perch 52. SP-7 Frog Here are my repeats I had no pics for!

I just took a walk up to the water ice place with my girl, my good friend Perch and his daughter who is 4. It is right across the street from the lake, so we brought our rods with us to sneak in a few casts while we ate water ice. My first screw up was not bringing my camera with me. I left it on my table right next to the front door. I have really gotten used to having it and almost feel like I don't even wanna fish without it. Almost. I have really been trying to get my buddy's daughter to see the beavers in my local for the first time. There was a baby beaver who more than helped with that. He swam up right in front of us, about 6 feet away from land, where we were standing. She definitely got a kick out of that!!!
Then I took my buddy's J-9 in pike, a lure I don't have and caught a bass with it. It would have been a decent little trip for me, except I proceeded to lose my F-9 Vampire on my last cast. I will never be able to afford all the lures I want, so even losing an easily replaceable one like that really pisses me off. I guess now I have to take the boat out tomorrow to go look for it!!

I almost forgot, the best part of the whole trip was that my friend's 4 yr old daughter, who is basically my niece, released the bass for me. She held the bass by it's lip and dropped him back into the water. The look on her face, and the nervous laughing she did as she was trying to lip grip the bass was priceless!!!I haven't been able to get my youngest nephew to do that yet and he'll be 7 in a few weeks!! I bet that once he hears that she did it, he may be a little more motivated though.

Great Job. thats what its about getting young kids involved in fishing or the outdoors. I always do what I can to get the young people out if that means fishing and hunting trips or just letting them pick a bait out of the tackle box when its clear they or their parents dont have the means to buy their own. Thats what they remember when they get older and it keeps the sport alive!

I hear you Nathanha!! I gave her the first lure she ever had, a hot pink x-rap 8 I won from Rapalanation in the slogan contest. She always takes alot of interest in my lures. I have a custom from Steve that I got for my girlfriend(her aunt,my girl and my best friend are step brother/sister), which has her name on it. After seeing that, she now has to have one!!! I let her look through Steve's SCT gallery and pick out what she liked when we got home today. As soon as I get a few extra bucks, I am definitely going to surprise her with it. A few minutes after looking at his gallery, she opened my tackle box and said "So, which ones are Steve's? I wanna check them out!!" I think she may be the newest, and youngest SCT fan!! Things like that make life worth living for me!!! Almost makes me want my own kids, but for now I'll stick to nieces and nephews!!

Steve Wow Steve, that's one heck of a generous gesture!!! You are the man buddy!!! Her name is Kayla, and her favorite pattern of yours is Dino. If you could put it on a J-9 or an F-9 that would be awesome. Those lures work great in my local lake, and I think either would work to get her her first bass ever. I can't wait to tell her I have a surprise coming for her. She's gonna be very excited. Hopefully I can get her first bass caught with it on video!!! Thanks again Steve I really appreciate it, and I know she will too!!

I had a pretty nice day today!! This bet may not last till June!! I caught ten total fish, with eight being on new lures. I also caught two on my SSR-7 BB. I was trying to get a better picture of a bass on it, but only ended up catching two small pickerel. I pulled out my DT FAT 1's for the first time today, and caught something on all 6 that I own!! I definitely need to get my hands on a few more of those!! I also pulled out a few of my Skitter Props. I actually think it's a pretty good lure. Ever since I've gained confidence in it, I've really begun to like it. It's definitely got it's place in my repertoire from now on!! I will try next time to get a good video of how I use it. Instead of using a hard jerk like you would with a popper, I reel up the slack, and then drag the lure across the surface for 6 to 8 inches. I have used it in ultra clear water where I could see fish come running towards it from quite a distance. It has a very distinctive sound that is way different than that of the Skitter Pop! I also had to rescue a carp that had gotten stuck in the dam that the beavers had built. I have it on video and will post it later. It takes a while on my dinosaur computer. Well, here are my latest victims!!! 56. DT FAT-1 Green Shad 57. DT FAT-1 Silver 58. DT FAT-1 Bleeding Olive Shiner 59. DT FAT-1 Firetiger 60. DT FAT-1 Green Sunfish (SCT Custom from Steve) 61. DT FAT-1 Gold 62. SPR-7 Limefrog 63. SPR-7 Silver
